Bureau Chief (Seoul, Korea)

Seasoned journalist with top-notch managerial skills needed as RFA’s Korean Service Bureau Chief in Seoul, Korea. This position reports to the Korean Service Director in RFA’s Washington DC office.

Responsibilities Include

  •  Managing all aspects of RFA’s Seoul office under the supervision of the Korean Service Director.
  •  Keeping Washington DC headquarters abreast of all major news developments and issues, trouble-  shooting problems as they arise, and planning for future events.
  • Contributing content and editorial assistance for Korean Service programming.
  • Supervising all Korean Service staff in the Seoul office in close coordination with the Korean Service Director, and maintaining the highest journalistic standards possible in all Korean Service reports for broadcast and online distribution.
  • Providing direction to the Seoul office manager and broadcasting staff to ensure that all office editorial and administrative functions are carried out professionally and timely, and that budget duties are handled accurately and in coordination with RFA’s Finance Department.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the Korean Service Director.

Qualifications

  • College degree in journalism/communications or a related discipline is required.  A graduate degree in same, or equivalent transferable experience, is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated achievement in journalism (at least 10 years’ full-time experience) is required, and experience in broadcast or online media is a plus.
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of current political, economic and social conditions in North Korea and surrounding countries is required.
  • Managerial experience is required; knowledge of media technology, human resources and financial management is highly preferred.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required, as is familiarity with language of North Korea.
