Accomplished journalist/editor with excellent interpersonal communication and personnel management skills needed for Deputy Director position in the Burmese Service, based in Radio Free Asia’s Washington, DC offices.
Responsibilities Include
- Assisting the Service Director in planning, directing, and supervising the development of program materials; analyzing political, cultural, and economic trends; and presenting a cohesive, listener-friendly broadcast.
- Supervising a broadcast staff, coaching and managing performance, building effective teams, and handling employee relations matters with discretion and respect.
- Assisting in the consistent and even-handed application and enforcement of RFA policy on all journalistic, editorial, and ethical issues, as well as on workplace standards and rules.
- Helping maintain quality control on all Burmese Service broadcasts by monitoring the broadcasts and, in consultation with the Service Director, identifying and implementing program and production improvements.
- Coordinating information gathering and news feeds among RFA bureau personnel, stringers, editorial consultants, and outside news sources.
- Assisting the Service Director in directing the development of original scripts on news, current events, features, and other topics of interest to the audience, and in guiding staff and reviewing scripts for compliance with stated instructions.
- Establishing and maintaining contact with Burma, U.S., and worldwide specialists and sources to enhance program content and development.
- Keeping staff informed of political, cultural, and economic developments that may contribute to a production.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Experience in broadcast or print journalism (at least five years’ full-time experience in a media company preferred), and multimedia experience a plus.
- Experience in a supervisory capacity (at least two years’ people-management experience preferred).
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with personnel in a professional, collegial, and respectful manner; experience in conflict-resolution and team-building a plus.
- Academic credentials (Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field from an accredited college or university preferred) or equivalent transferable skills showing ability to plan, produce, and direct live on-air shows and the publication of news and information clearly and objectively.
- Knowledge of world affairs and understanding of current political, economic and social conditions in Burma and other countries in Asia.
- Strong editing skills and demonstrated ability to exercise unbiased, timely, and principled news analysis and judgment.
- Fluency in spoken and written Burmese and English languages.
