2009-06-09

Chen Guang was 17 and a soldier in 1989, when orders came down on June 3 to clear Tiananmen Square of student-led protesters, by force if necessary. Chen says he didn’t shoot anyone, but the crackdown has stayed with him—inspiring much of his painting since he graduated from the Chinese Academy of Fine Art in 1997. Photos of Chen Guang's oil paintings by the artist. Reporting by Li Ruoqing.
