'A Second Saffron Revolution'

2008-09-17

Following are excerpts from an interview with a Burmese monk who asked not to be named:

It isn't good for the monks; movement to remain quiet. As I see it, it should remain active. The people and leaders of the world have become aware of the Burma issue because of the leadership of the monks.

With regard to [the military junta] not fulfilling those demands, I see it as giving rise to reasons for a second Saffron Revolution. The monks within the country are still refusing to provide religious activities for the military government and the monks outside the country are also continuing with their efforts. That is why I believe that there will be a second Saffron Revolution.

The State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) constitution was unjustly drawn up by the military, and [it is] a constitution to deliberately establish a military dictatorship. What we have planned for the 2010 elections is a signature and media campaign to make this clear to the public.

The SPDC constitution will prolong the rule of the military dictatorship.

The people shouldn't participate in the 2010 elections and shouldn't vote for it.
