Radio Free Asia (RFA) is a private, Washington, DC-based, nonprofit corporation that provides accurate and timely news and information to Asian countries whose governments prohibit access to a free press. Delivered in nine Asian languages in addition to English, our journalism extends beyond radio to include web, video, mobile and e-books. We are currently seeking a highly competent candidate to lead the Seoul Bureau, he/she will be responsible to lead and to manage all aspects of the South Korea office and be in constant communication with Korean Service Director, who is based in Washington D.C. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • To be the legal representative of RFA’s Seoul office.
  • Managing all aspects of RFA’s Seoul office under the supervision of the Korean Service Director.
  • Keeps Washington DC headquarters abreast of all major news developments and issues, trouble-shoots problems as they arise, and plans for future events.
  • Contributes content and editorial assistance for Korean Service programming.
  • Supervises all Korean Service staff in the Seoul office in close coordination with the Korean Service Director, and maintains the highest journalistic standards possible in all Korean Service reports for broadcast and online distribution.
  • Maintains communications with Korean Service personnel in Washington DC and with RFA stringers and consultants in Seoul, for efficient programming and resource management.
  • Provides direction to the Seoul office manager and broadcasting staff to ensure that all office editorial and administrative functions are carried out professionally and timely, and that budget duties are handled accurately and in coordination with RFA’s Finance Department.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Korean Service Director and RFA’s senior management. 

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, International Relations, Politics or related fields. An Advanced degree is preferred.
  • At least 15 years of journalism experience and 5 years of managing experience. Candidates with broadcasting experience is a plus.
  • A strong editorial judgment is required
  • A comprehensive understanding of DPRK and the bilateral relations between DPRK and ROK is required.
  • The ability to communicate in English with the senior management in DC
