Data Journalist, Asia Fact Check Lab

Asia Fact Check Lab is a new platform by Radio Free Asia that aims to provide viewers with accurate and unbiased analysis of China-related statements made in public in order to counter misinformation and disinformation and to increase knowledge of critical issues. Asia Fact Check Lab is currently seeking an experienced and creative data journalist to generate data reporting. This full-time position is open for US- and Taipei-based candidates. 

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Working with team members to shape, pitch, and develop data-oriented story ideas.
  • Researching and producing original data reporting and components of special reports.
  • Conceiving and executing data-oriented special reports.
  • Collecting and extracting data from news outlets and social media.
  • Performing data/network analysis.
  • Working with RFA’s Editorial team to plan annual reporting schedules and fit data reporting into its editorial calendar.
  • Working with RFA’s management team to develop a strong data reporting and visualization component that drives the Lab's innovative storytelling.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Mass Communication, Information Science, or related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum three years in data analysis or reporting in a newsroom setting.
  • Demonstrated ability in crushing data and distilling takeaways from analysis into compelling visuals.
  • Excellent news judgment and an expansive understanding of mobile-first experience and design.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the Chinese media environment.
  • Ability to work on multiple stories simultaneously and meet strict deadlines.
  • Deep knowledge of Illustrator and Adobe Suite. 
  • Familiarity with data reporting and mapping tools such as SQL, Python and QGIS.
  • Working knowledge of responsive design, HTML, CSS, Javascript and D3 is a plus.
  • Good interpersonal skills and comfort working with a remote team that is in different time zones. Ability to attend meetings and work with team members remotely.
  • Desire to help to grow a new area of reporting in a new and innovative team.
  • Fluency in written and verbal Mandarin and English
