Editor, Cantonese Service (Taipei-Based)

Radio Free Asia (RFA) is a private, Washington, DC-based, nonprofit corporation that provides accurate and timely news and information to Asian countries whose governments prohibit access to a free press. Delivered in nine Asian languages in addition to English, our journalism extends beyond radio to include web, video, mobile, and e-books. RFA Cantonese Service is currently seeking a dynamic and motivated editing professional to join its team and help it fulfill its mission. This is a position based in our Taipei office, 


Responsibilities Include: 

  • Making assignments and guiding RFA reporters in Taiwan in developing news and feature reports. 
  • Working with the RFA Cantonese team in Taipei , United Kingdom and in the United States to discuss story ideas and edit them.
  • Editing stories published on RFA Cantonese webpage and social media platforms; Rewriting or editing articles to improve readability and ensure they align with the organization's editorial voice and style guide.
  • Crafting engaging headlines, subheadings, and captions that accurately reflect the content and attract readers' attention.
  • Fact-checking information and verify sources to maintain the credibility of the news content.
  • Researching and writing original feature stories, articles, and components of special reports. 
  • Covering news events and other noteworthy events as assigned; pitches stories when time permits.
  • Keeping abreast of local and international news developments, particularly those relevant to Hong Kong.
  • Ensuring that all published content adheres to journalistic ethics and standards of accuracy, fairness, and impartiality.
  • Attending news conferences, events, and meetings to gather information and network with sources.
  • Handling sensitive or controversial topics with discretion and sensitivity, considering potential legal risks and ethical implications.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned. 



  • Minimum 5 years of professional journalism editing experience in reputable news organizations, preferably specializing in Hong Kong and China news;digital journalism experience is strongly preferred 
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field, an advanced degree is a plus.
  • Required language skills: Native fluency in Cantonese is a must, with good proficiency in Mandarin and English 
  • Excellent attention to detail with the ability to reliably produce typo-free work
  • Professional ability to work well with remote colleagues and across multicultural teams
  • High degree of fluency with popular social networks/platforms,
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of current political, economic, and social conditions in Hong Kong and surrounding countries, as well as its culture and people.  
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound news judgment and discretion in evaluating news stories 
  • Must be able to work under pressure
  • Must be able to commit to working in RFA's Taipei office.
