Front-End Web Developer, Global Mandarin

Global Mandarin is a new digital media platform by Radio Free Asia that aims to inform and engage with young Mandarin-speaking audiences around the world. As it gears up to begin delivering independent information that presents various perspectives on subjects important to its audiences, Global Mandarin is currently seeking a dynamic and motivated Front-end Web Developer, who will be working with reporters, editors, producers and designers to tell visual stories and help the team fulfill its mission.

The Front-end Web Developer will have with experience in Drupal8, HTML5 and CSS3. This individual will provide graphic and web design expertise and will be responsible for creating, enhancing, and implementing new web page designs and layouts, primarily in a newly developed Drupal environment.

Primary skills include experience building and troubleshooting websites within the Drupal framework and content management system (CMS).

Responsibilities Include:

  • Build stunning digital web design and content layouts for a variety of reporting projects within the new Drupal8 website platform environment.
  • Evaluate stories and reporter ideas for visual storytelling and web content presentation possibilities.
  • Tell stories through smart and freshly designed UX, graphics, maps and data visualization, and other creative forms of storytelling.
  • Develop innovative usable interfaces; implement effective, graphical, and functional designs within the Drupal CMS.
  • Assist in UI/UX decisions based on a strong understanding of W3C and usability standards and best practices, and reflect them in design as appropriate
  • Assess the design templates and update them when needed.
  • Design content and layout prototypes and build custom presentations for large special report projects.


  • Minimum of two years' working in a news designer/developer role.
  • Minimum of two years’ Drupal development and theming experience.
  • Strong digital design experience with a good command of modern UI/UX principles, typography, and web accessibility guidelines.
  • Strong knowledge of modern HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • High level of proficiency with the Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Fireworks, Dreamweaver, After Effects), HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, XML, and MySQL, Sketch and SketchUp.
  • Comfort working individually as well as multiple teams on deadline and ability to balance short-term and long-term projects.
  • Desire to learn new skills and adapt quickly to newsroom needs
