Photo Editor

Radio Free Asia (RFA) seeks a seasoned Photo Editor to join its Creative Team. This person will be responsible for selecting photos and video shot by staff and freelancers, finding images and video on our wire services and elsewhere to illustrate daily and advance stories, as well as projects. Working closely with the Creative Director and Visual Project Manager, the Photo Editor will help to set the visual standards and proper practice for RFA/BenarNews services. They will also work closely with tech-ops to build a better Asset Management System and visual archives. This position reports to Visual Project Manager.  

 Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Proactively finding images and video on wire services, social media, government and organization websites and in RFA archives to effectively illustrate stories for all RFA services. 
  • Selecting photos for all daily and weekend RFA English stories
  • Cropping, toning and adjusting images as needed
  • Writing and rewriting photo captions, ensuring the accuracy of all information
  • Putting images and captions in appropriate folders 
  • Ensuring photos and videos match or appropriately complement stories
  • When needed, contacting the owners of images and video - especially on social media - and obtaining permission to publish their content
  • Creating engaging photo essays
  • Assigning and directing photographers/videographers in their assignments by providing background and other details for their shoot that will ensure their success
  • Generating ideas for photos, videos and stories
  • Hiring freelance photographers
  • Coaching photographers
  • Looking for ways to improve the RFA photo and video report
  • Working collaboratively with team members
  • Archiving photos and video that have been used and also those that have not been used
  • Helping develop the Digital Asset Management system
  • Staying up to date on technology
  • Other duties as assigned

 Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Photography or a closely related field is required.
  • At least five years of experience in photo editing at a news organization is required. 
  • Language proficiency in RFA's broadcast languages is strongly preferred.
  • Portfolio of work required.
