Security Systems Administrator

Radio Free Asia (RFA) is a private, Washington, DC-based, nonprofit corporation that provides accurate and timely news and information to Asian countries whose governments prohibit access to a free press. Delivered in nine Asian languages in addition to English, our journalism extends beyond radio to include web, video, mobile and e-books. RFA is currently seeking a talented Security Systems Administrator who can provide daily support to the organization and its employees on system issues including but not limited to installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting systems. 


Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Maintains appropriate access and security levels throughout active directory, servers, LAN/WAN, and other security-related equipment.
  • Monitors system and security logs, activity and network traffic for suspicious behavior; performs remediation tasks as necessary.
  • Performs risk assessments, such as vulnerability and penetration tests, to ensure security measures identify and defend against threats.
  • Assists in developing and implementing a disaster recovery plan to safeguard data from accidental or unauthorized modification, destruction, or disclosure.
  • Assists in developing network policies, security standards, and authorization roles for users to adhere to in defense against unauthorized access, modifications, and destruction.
  • Maintains current knowledge of emerging security and technology trends, vulnerabilities and breaches; makes recommendations for system protection upgrades and security standards as needed.
  • Configures and provides technical support for security tools, such as firewalls, filtering and anti-virus/ Host-Based Security Systems, endpoint management software.
  • Conducts training for users to understand and adhere to security protocols.
  • Maintains hardware inventory and procedural documentation.
  • Locally and remotely push software updates/ patches
  • Collaborates and networks with other IT support personnel and professionals.
  • May work in a system administrator capacity at times
  • Other duties as assigned.



  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, System Administration, or a closely related field required (2 years of additional relevant experience may be substituted for education)
  • 2+  years of relevant experience in cyber security and/ or system administration experience
  • Security+ certification
  • Experience in multi-platform environments preferred.
  • Knowledge of virus and spyware protection tools, security devices, and respective software
  • Ability to troubleshoot security, network, and software problems.
  • Understanding of analysis tools and network protocols such as SSL, HTTP, DNS, SMTP and IPsec
  • Knowledge of common protocols
  • A strong understanding of firewall technologies
  • Intermediate to expert intrusion detection system/intrusion prevention system knowledge
  • Deep understanding of IT infrastructure, including protocols, operating systems and networks
  • Experience working on on-prem and cloud platforms preferred
  • Ability to take initiative
  • Excellent attention to detail; proven problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to learn quickly
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Ability to multi-task and set priorities in a flexible manner to address changing needs.
  • Work may be required outside of core working hours. Minimum travel may be required.
  • Ability to lift/carry/push up to 50 Lbs. 
  • Excellent writing and communication skills, including proven experience, effectively communicating technical challenges and solutions to peers, customers and senior management


Preferred Qualifications:

  • One or more of the follow certifications is preferred: CASP+, Network+, CySA+, ENSA
  • Knowledge of advanced PowerShell scripting, Group Policy Objects (GPO) experience, Group Policy precedence order and scope of management, WMI filters, Group Policy Preferences, group-based GPO filtering
  • Knowledge of Linux and/ or Windows Server Operating Systems 2016 & up
  • Non-profit experience is a plus
