Social Media Editor (English Language)

Radio Free Asia (RFA) is a private, Washington, DC-based, nonprofit corporation that provides accurate and timely news and information to Asian countries whose governments prohibit access to a free press. We are currently seeking an experienced social media editor who can effectively connect RFA journalism to English-speaking audience in countries that we broadcast on a variety of platforms.

This role requires close collaboration with reporters and editors across RFA, and you will be deeply embedded with the English language and Investigations editorial units. You will translate English editorial goals into social media strategies and actions, as well as educate your colleagues about social media best practices and effective content tactics.This position is based in our Washington, D.C. office and may require night and/or weekend work.

The ideal candidate should have experience managing a news organization’s social media accounts for tight daily deadlines, executing rollouts of featured reporting, and optimizing content formats and messaging for each social platform. Familiarity with Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube engagement metrics is required. Comfort using analytics tools such as Emplifi, CrowdTangle, Chartbeat, and Adobe Analytics is preferred.

 

Key responsibilities:

  • Spearhead RFA’s English-Language News and Investigative Team’s presence on social media, from devising and implementing creative tactics that are aligned with the organization’s values and objectives, to day-to-day management of RFA English social media channels.
  • Create native social content including stories, reels, tweets and other visual treatments, including formats and packages that can be adapted by other RFA language teams 
  • Foster English-speaking audience growth and engagement across different social media platforms, respond to inquiries and moderate comments as needed
  • Identify and engage with online thought leaders, and relevant communities to expand RFA’s social media reach and build strategic partnerships.
  • Provide key social media performance analysis, data-driven insights to newsroom teams that inform editorial strategy and decision-making
  • Develop data-driven testing strategies for messaging and content formats that continually inform updates of audience engagement best practices
  • Develop new workflows, tools and strategies as social media evolves and new platforms emerge
  • Follow industry trends to identify innovative tools and processes; identifying opportunities to grow and engage audiences on new and existing platforms

 

Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience in creating and managing social media content for a professional business, ideally for a news organization
  • Excellent writing and editing skills,possess a keen eye for detail
  • Savvy visual storyteller with high proficiency in video and graphics editing skills
  • Strong knowledge of social media analytics platforms and content scheduling tools, proven ability in using data in decision making
  • Professional-level fluency with popular social networks/platforms, including their algorithms, and audience behaviors, and a passion for following the latest social media trends
  • Familiarity with international news, current affairs, and global events
  • Professional experience in digital journalism is highly desirable
  • Knowledge of Asia and background covering the region
  • Ability to work well with remote colleagues and across multi-cultural teams
  • A strong and active personal social media presence is a plus
