Thai Content Manager, BenarNews (Bangkok-Based)

BenarNews is a digital media platform at Radio Free Asia that provides clear and accurate news on security, politics and human rights on the local and regional level in the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Bangladesh, and Pacific Island nations. BenarNews is seeking a top-notch journalist, fluent in both Thai and English, to help cover Thailand in diverse formats.

This vital position reports directly to the head of Thai news in Bangkok and the Washington-based Thai senior content manager. This is a full-time position based in Bangkok, Thailand. Working hours are mid-afternoon to late evening in Thailand, with occasional weekend duties.

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining a thorough knowledge of developing events in Thailand and the region. 
  • Helping to identify and present stories that reflect the mission and editorial strategy of BenarNews and that are in the close interest of the target audience. 
  • Editing articles at a consistently high standard for clarity, accuracy, and flow
  • Publishing content on the BenarNews Thai website and other appropriate social media platforms. 
  • Using creative skills and an ethical approach to generate engaging visual storytelling and representation.
  • Led day-to-day operations in Thailand when the head of Thai news is on leave.
  • Upholding the BenarNews code of journalistic ethics for both writing and multimedia formats.
  • Translating Thai or English content as needed.
  • Assisting to ensure that the Thai web page and social media platforms are clean, lively, and timely updated; when appropriate, fostering a healthy community and engagements with its audience. 
  • Working with video team to ensure that the multimedia content produced are accurate and engaging.
  • Working closely with other BenarNews Thai team members, including assisting with managing the stringers. 
  • Performing other duties as assigned, including but not limited to occasionally working with RFA’s teams. 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five recent years of experience in journalism in a professional newsroom environment with daily reporting responsibility, with a strong focus in Thailand and its surrounding countries.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or related field
  • Fluency in managing content on various social media platforms,  with prior professional social media management experience in news organizations.
  • Strong familiarity working with various types of multimedia formats
  • Native fluency in Thai with strong English language skill
  • Top-notch news writing skills, ability to write simply, clearly, and concisely, while ensuring readability
  • Sophisticated understanding of Thai audiences and their media consumption preferences, track record of effectively reaching and engaging with audiences. 
  • Video and photo editing skills are highly preferred 
  • Ability to work in an international workplace; excellent cross-cultural communication skills
  • Must be willing to work afternoon and evening hours in order to collaborate with Washington D.C. staff. Occasional weekend work is required
