Three Press Awards for RFA in Hong Kong

At an annual human rights press award in Hong Kong, RFA won three of the four awards given for Chinese language radio broadcasting.

"Some of the best journalists in Hong Kong were there, in an overflow crowd. It was a great moment for RFA," said Dan Southerland, RFA vice president of programming and executive editor.

Hong Kong-based stringer Ding Xiao won a prize for her world exclusive on the shootings by police of peasant protesters in Dongzhou township in southern China that resulted in the deaths of three villagers.

She also won a merit certificate for her interview with a human rights lawyer who had been beaten up and detained by the police.

Chief correspondent James Zhu won a certificate for his interviews in Dongzhou. He managed to get in and out of the township after it was surrounded by the police.

A few audio clips of the reporting were played during the ceremony.

The awards were given out jointly by Amnesty International, the Hong Kong Journalists Association, and the Foreign Correspondents Club of Hong Kong. Entries were judged for originality, professionalism, depth of understanding, and, where relevant, courage on the part of the journalists.
