Nobel for the Noble

The Norwegian Nobel Committee, in a show of support for media freedom and the fight against disinformation, has awarded the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize to editors Maria Ressa of the Philippines and Dmitry Muratov of Russia. The pair have carried on with bold investigative journalism in their respective countries, each run by authoritarian strongmen, where journalists are regularly harassed, jailed, or killed.

“Free, independent and fact-based journalism serves to protect against abuse of power, lies and war propaganda,” said Berit Reiss-Andersen, chair of the Nobel Committee.
