National Unity Party (NUP)
It was established in October 1988 as a proxy party of the military and as a successor to the Burma Socialist Programme Party of long-time authoritarian ruler Ne Win. NUP leaders were Ne Win loyalists and former military officers. It contested the 1990 elections but won just 10 seats as the NLD swept to victory -- a result that the military refused to recognize. The NUP performed marginally better in 2012 elections, but won just one seat in the 2015 elections. It plans to contest 2020 elections nationwide.
Than Tin
He is a retired brigadier general who served as a government minister in the 1970s under Ne Win. He served as party general secretary and was elected as its chairman in 2014 after the death of its first chairman, Tun Yi, who was former deputy commander of the armed forces.
