Union Betterment Party (UBP)

It was founded in 2019 as a vehicle for ex-general-turned politician, Thura Shwe Mann. It advocates a nationalist agenda, but also says it would promote peace and reconciliation.

Thura Shwe Mann

He had a four decade military career, rising to become the third-most powerful leader in the former ruling junta and a key associate of former junta leader Than Shwe. He was lower House speaker from 2011 to 2016 during the USDP government, and also served as that party’s chair from 2013 to 2015. He had surprisingly cordial relations with Aung San Suu Kyi when he was serving as House speaker.
