Zomi Congress for Democracy
Zomi Congress for Democracy was founded in 1988 when the military regime allowed political parties to register. It is allied with Aung San Suu Kyi’s NLD. It won two seats in the 1990 election but was abolished by the junta two years later. It re-registered in 2012 and won six seats in the 2015 election. Its political aim is to achieve federated status in accordance with the 1947 Panglong Agreement. Its leader is Pu Chin Sian Thang, a former political prisoner and leader of the Chin Student Union, who was arrested at least six times under the military regime of Ne Win. He was also one of the leaders of a shadow parliamentary authority, the Committee Representing the People’s Parliament, that was formed in 1998 and led by Suu Kyi in a direct challenge to the then-ruling junta.
