Yes, I heartily agree, Rachel. There are no vowel glides in Uyghur phonology, vowels are very pure. The 'y' is definitely a consonant in their name. thanks for a brilliant article.

I suspect the name is a close-mouth pharyngeal and open-mouthed gur with slurred ur. It would totally sound like Ur pronounced from a pharyngeal growl.
