WASHINGTON, Nov. 28, 2003Radio Free Asia (RFA) on Friday informed The Washington Post of inaccuracies in its article Scholar Says U.S. Unharmed; Gao Defends Human Rights Efforts, Appeals for Sympathy (Nov. 28).

The article describes Gao Zhan as a "U.S. permanent resident who now lives in Herndon and does freelance work for Voice of America's Radio Free Asia..."

This statement mischaracterizes Radio Free Asia as a partner or subsidiary of Voice of America, which is inaccurate. Radio Free Asia is a private nonprofit news organization unrelated to Voice of America, although both are overseen by the same Broadcasting Board of Governors.

It also mischaracterizes Gao Zhan's work for RFA. Among other commitments, Ms. Gao has contributed weekly on-air commentaries related to women's issues over the last two years, as an outside contractor for RFA's Mandarin service. Her contract was terminated on Nov. 26.#####
