PHNOM PENHCambodian authorities have arrested 51 Vietnamese and one Cambodian man off the coast of Kampot Province for illegal fishing, RFAs Khmer service reports.

We arrested all of them on Jan. 12 because they came to fish in our waters without a passport or legal documents, Kampot provincial police chief Sin Sarin told RFA. The area in which the men were fishing is approximately 143 kms southwest of Cambodias capital city Phnom Penh.

I am sending the co-ministers of the Interior today a request for the deportation of the men back to Vietnam according to an agreement between Vietnam and Cambodia. All 52 fishermen are in police custody in Kampot Province. As soon as a decision is made, we will inform Vietnam to take these people and their boats back home, Sin Sarin said.

The Cambodia Fishery Department will fine the men for illegal fishing. Cambodia shares approximately 800 kms of boundary lines with Vietnam, more than 1,000 kms with Thailand, and more than 500 kms with Laos. #####
