Reforestation Offers Hope for Myanmar’s Sinking Island
2020-02-05
The island of Kaing Thaung near the mouth of the Ayeyarwaddy River in Myanmar is in danger of being washed away by rising sea levels. After years of land erosion, the island’s Buddhist stupa is now in the sea, and during storms, 60 percent of the island is submerged. Locals have sought to combat erosion by replanting mangrove trees, which offer protection from the assault of the elements.
