Amid intensifying Sino-American economic and strategic rivalry, some U.S. lawmakers and local governments have started to call for restricting the ability of foreigners, particularly from China, to buy American farmland. They cite concerns about protecting the U.S. food-supply chain and preventing possible spying. Chinese holdings of U.S. farmland have increased dramatically over the past decade, but entities and individuals from China own only a tiny fraction of agricultural lands in the country.
